Hazel
A call came in from the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter; two purebred Rhodesian Ridgebacks were in danger of immediate euthanasia. I had seen pictures of these dogs on Facebook and there had been discussions of pulling the dogs from the shelter. For whatever reason, time had run out and time was up for these dogs. Now, one was old and the other labeled as aggressive, perhaps the reason they were still in the shelter.
Hazel is the old one and her only behavioral fault is that she is extremely shy. Not surprising as both these dogs had been living in the woods with a number of other dogs for several months. Hazel’s age has been estimated at 8-10 years of age. After several weeks of regular meals and comfortable living I would have to say she appears to be much closer to 8 than 10 years of age. Though still somewhat shy, she is an extremely sweet and lovable girl. Her personality shines through the shyness and I have to believe that in the right home, that home will more than compensate for the years.
It is obvious she has nursed several litters of puppies, and the scars indicate a rough life. Despite all this, the beauty, both physical and expressive, hides all deficiencies. After living in the wild with little or no human contact, other than those trying to catch her, she seems more than ready to accept human attention. On her first visit from the kennel, she immediately made herself at home in my recliner.
Should anyone be willing to take the time and win her trust, her presence will surely enhance the lives of all in her home. The radiance of her personality will make each day a brighter day.
Hazel came to Texas Independent Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue on 9/4/24. We are estimating the age to be 8 years old. Hazel is a female purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback.
